Psychotherapy and Counselling

The very fact you’re reading this means that your life isn’t working out the way you want it to.  You know something has to change but it’s so hard to see what the next step is. Working with me will give you a safe space to allow you to discuss what’s troubling you. I’ll work with you to help you cope with what’s happening in the here and now and find a way of moving forward.

Counsellor | Coach | Trainer
BSc (Hons), MA, PGCE, PGDip, MAPM, RPP, MNCS (Accred), MBACP

Are you struggling to sleep, waking up in the early hours obsessing about yesterday and worrying about the day to come? You’ve invested so much, worked so hard to get here, and yet every day still feels like a fight. And you’re tired, so tired, you can’t focus on anything and you’ll do anything and everything you can to distract yourself from the pain you’re feeling. Do you stay in your relationship or take the risk and leave? Can you even say the words you’ve been turning over and over in your head out loud?

The very fact you’re reading this means that despite everything you’ve tried so far your life isn’t working out the way you want it to. You know something has to change but it’s so hard to see what the next step is. Maybe you want to change certain aspects of you life or explore your feelings in more depth.

Working with me will give you a safe space to allow you to discuss your problems and difficult feelings in an unbiased, confidential environment. I won’t tell you what to do or give you advice. Instead I will work with you to establish what is going on right now, identify any limiting assumptions and help you cope with the here and now and find a way of moving forward. Together we’ll work out what your goals are from therapy and how we can achieve those.

Having a greater awareness of yourself and the way you think can help you develop a clearer understanding of your problems and make it easier to navigate your way through any difficulties you are facing, so that eventually you can come out the other side feeling more positive. Therapy can also help you better understand other people’s point of view, which can shed light onto the way you interpret words or actions.

There’s no set pattern to therapy. Sometimes a single session is all that’s needed, however, most people need several sessions to help them overcome the issues they’re facing. Therapy is a journey, and it can take time and consistency to work effectively. Because of this, many people opt for regular counselling sessions to make the most of the process.

During our first session we’ll agree some clear boundaries that cover the following:

  • Dates and times of the sessions
  • Confidentiality
  • How we’ll work together – including whether we meet face to face, work on the phone, online or use a blend of these method
  • How and when we will contact each other if needed outside of sessions

We can agree to meet for a small number of focused sessions to get you through the immediate crisis or you may feel you need longer to help you make more significant life changes. Or somewhere in between – you decide! We’ll keep reviewing how it’s going until you feel ready to move on.

It’s also really important that you feel safe and comfortable to talk to me about your thoughts and feelings. And if for any reason you don’t it’s ok to say that during our initial session.

I have a particular interests in the following areas.

Relationships – Relationships can be really tough – whether that’s your relationship with your partner, your family friends or work colleagues. Therapy can help you work through any issues with your relationships and make better choices.

Bereavement and loss – Loss can take a wide variety of forms; it can be loss of a loved one, loss of a relationship, a role or a job and it can bring up a wide range of emotions including guilt and anger. Most people benefit from speaking openly about their feelings to help ease the process and resolve any remaining issues.

Illness – Suffering from a long-term illness such as cancer or dementia can turn anyone’s world upside down. Working with me can help you come to terms with your illness while offering emotional support and coping mechanisms.

Stress and anxiety – Most of us have feelings of stress and anxiety at some points. Working with me will give you practical strategies for managing these kinds of issues, as well as allowing you the space to vent your frustrations and feelings.

Ways of working

Face-to-face – This is when we meet in person. Face-to-face sessions are currently one of the more popular therapy formats.

Telephone and video conferencing – For some clients, working via the telephone or via video offers an extremely flexible alternative to face-to-face counselling.

IM and e-mail – Some clients prefer to use text rather than to talk. This form of therapy offers you the chance to protect your anonymity. If you opt for e-mail counselling it can give also you time to think through what you wish to discuss, and many find the act of physically writing their issues down cathartic.
